I am not sure how or why I got sidetracked with this…but I jumped off the cliff and started in on learning signaling. I already had detection in place, so I thought it cant be that hard, right? As with most things JMRI, there is a steep learning curve. I think I have most of the basics figured out and have (virtual) signals protecting the siding! I am still tweaking here and there, but for the most part it works automatically as intended. Now to try a real (model) signal on the layout to see if I can transition this into the model world.
